Follonica is a small seaside, town, full of activities and places to discover.
We’ll be happy to support you with all the information of the most beautiful itineraries and and beaches , the best restaurants and trattorias in Follonica and closed by localities where you can taste our typical local food.
In Follonica dogs have free access to the beaches from 7 pm to to 10 am (bathing is also allowed), but the access is forbidden from 10 am to 7 pm.
In the other ours of the day access and bathing are only allowed for dogs in the two “Bau Beach areas“. You can find one north of the Pietraia stream (near to Ponte della Gora) and the other on the north of Fosso Cervia (Boschetto area).
On the whole Grosseto seaside you can also find other dog beaches.
Il boschetto, Pratoranieri and Il lido are the closest to the town. We have a lot of bathing establishments, but there’re also a lot of areas with free beach. The sand is fine and the seabed is very shallow.
A few kilometers away you can find La Polveriera, perfect for children due to its very shallow water and the lack of currents.
3 km from Follonica, within the beautiful Coastal Park of Sterpaia, are situated the Carbonifera beach and the Torre Mozza beach, both are characterized by dunes of light and fine sand and a beautiful pine forest behind them. Here you can choose between an equipped beach or a free one.
Along the 11 kilometers of coastline you can find the
beach of the turtles, Cala Felice, and the Puntone beach (where dogs are welcome). Here the sea is clear and transparent, with gently sloping sandy bottoms. There are both: free and equipped beaches. Perfect for who travels with children and for who loves water sports (kitesurfing, windsurfing, paddling, kayaking and sailing).
The reserve offers a dense network of paths, for Mtb lovers, hiker or who simply loves walking in the nature. Here’re some of the most beautiful beaches in Tuscany, reachable only on foot or by bike, characterized by crystal clear waters and beautiful views. These include Cala Francese, Cala Martina and the enchanting Cala Violina.
A long beach with a magnificent pine forest of secular trees behind it, characterized by burnished and shiny sand (due to iron residues), with transparent and particularly warm water (because of the shallow waters). A few kilometers away it’s possible to visit the Necropoli di Populonia and the Rocca di Populonia.
The night in Follonica offers a lot of opportunities you’ll appreciate: restaurants, pubs, ice cream parlors, pastry shops, live music, open-air cinemas, summer evening markets and much more.
For those who are on holiday with children the opportunities for fun and entertainment are a lot: play areas in the parks, playgrounds for children, minigolf, water park, adventure park, areas with inflatable games.
Our guests can rent a court or book a padel lesson at Follonica Sporting Club.
It’s possible to organize boat trips with aperitifs or rent canoes to discover the coast.
In the surroundings you’ll find a lot of nature trails to discover on foot or by mountain bike.
You can rent E-bikes and Mountain Bike to discover beautiful itineraries in the nature. For those who love to explore the places by bicycle, there’s the possibility of renting bikes and E-bikes to move and cross Follonica on the cycle path along the seaside that reaches all the beach resorts. For who loves mountain biking, you can move along dirt lanes to discover more hidden and less frequented seaside corners.
Area of great interest for industrial history. It’s situated in the center of Follonica, in the area of the ILVA factories, which were dismissed in 1960. The area is the subject of an important restoration project, here you find the MAGMA the Museum of Cast Iron Arts, from the Maremma, the library and one symbol of the Tuscan Mining Geopark. The access portal of the area, was built in cast iron and is an important example of the neoclassical manufacturing.
Built between 1836 and 1838, it’s the best testimony of the excellent level reached by the Follonica foundry. It’s the only italian example of a church with a pediment, furnishings, friezes and decorations in cast iron.
In addition to it’s permanent collection, the Pinacoteca has also a rich calendar of modern and contemporary art exhibitions during the year.
Set up in the Puntone hydraulic toll booth, built in an eclectic style with Liberty decorations. The museum contains artifacts from the 3rd to the 1st century b.c. native to the Etruscan Portus Scabris. In back of it it’s possible to access to Le Bandite di Scarlino Nature Reserve through raised walkways that enter the Padule di Scarlino, to discover plants and animals. In the museum it’s possible to book guided tours to the archaeological-industrial site of Terra Rossa, near Portiglioni.
